    YEARBOOK CLUB:  Calling all artists. We would love to have you be a part of the 2017 Yearbook cover. Stop by Guidance and grab a letter or number or both.  Put your personal style on the yearbook cover this year!  Designs are due in the folder in the Guidance Office TODAY.

     

    LOST AND FOUND: Please take the time to check out all lost and found items in the cafeteria and the locker rooms. All items remaining after school today will be donated.

     

    OPEN GYM:  Beginning after vacation and continuing until April vacation, the Brown Gym will be open to students at 7:00 a.m for active choice.  If you are looking to begin your day with activities such as shooting baskets, jumping rope, or just walking around the gymnasium, you can drop by when you arrive to school.  Students will be dismissed at 7:15 a.m. to head to lockers and homeroom.  Open Gym will be available the following days by grade level:  Grade 6 on Tuesday mornings; Grade 7 on Wednesday mornings; and Grade 8 on Thursday mornings.  Equipment will be provided.

     

    RUSSIAN CLUB:  Starting on Wednesday, March 2nd, students are invited to attend Russian Club.  Are you interested in learning Russian and more about Russian culture, please attend.  Meetings will be held in Ms. Richards' room 125.

     

    RELAY FOR LIFE: is May 19, 2017. Participation Forms and Chaperone Forms can be found in the Main Office. Once completed, return them to Mrs. McBride and she will get them to the Relay for Life Committee at the High School. Remember there must be one chaperone (over the age of 25) for every ten members of your team.

    Dear Grade 8 Parents:

     

    As indicated on the November 4, 2016 letter announcing New York as our destination for the grade 8 end-of-year field trip, the purpose of this letter is to provide you with two pieces of information: a draft itinerary and directions to create an account with Jumpstreet, our tour company and make the initial $100 deposit.

     

    On Tuesday afternoon, we made some adjustments to our itinerary, so while Jumpstreet makes those changes, I will instead offer you the highlights of our three-day, two-night trip which departs HMS on Wednesday, June 7 and returns on Friday, June 9:

  • Dear Grade 8 Parents,

     

    We hope you and your family had a wonderful Thanksgiving.  This email is a follow-up to the one sent on November 9 regarding our end-of-year grade 8 field trip to New York City.  

     

    Initial Deposit

    Please be aware that a $100 deposit is due by the end of the day on Thursday, December 1.  The email sent on November 9 has the details for registering you and your child and submitting payment.  Please let us know if you need assistance.

     

    Behavior Contract

    During Tuesday morning’s homeroom, students will receive a Behavior Contract that must be signed by your child, a parent and then returned to homeroom on or before Friday, December 2.  This contract informs students and parents that our expectations on field trips are the same as the ones in school, and as such, students behavior in school is suggestive as to how they will behave outside of it.  It is certainly our hope and expectation that all students will be able to attend this field trip for its duration, however, students who fail to meet our expectations during school will not be permitted to attend our grade 8 field trip.  In addition, should misbehavior occur while on our field trip, we will ask a parent to come to New York to pick up your child.

    Dear Grade 8 Parents,
     
    As you know, on July 29, 2016, I communicated to you my decision to discontinue visiting Washington, D.C. for our grade 8 field trip.  In this letter, I stated that in finding an alternative to Washington, D.C., that I was “committed to keeping the cost of the trip under $700, utilizing bus transportation, and seeking your input and the input of our educators and students in finding an outstanding alternative.”

    Approximately 30 parents attended a Planning Meeting on the evening of September 12, 2016, where we developed a list of new sites and options for the grade 8 trip.  Over the course of the next six weeks, I held multiple meetings with parent, student and educator groups where individuals offered their ideas on destinations and activities.  The unanimous selection from the three groups was New York City.  I am pleased to inform you that the following was approved at Thursday’s School Committee meeting: 

    Grade 8 End-of-Year Field Trip
    • Depart: early morning on Wednesday, June 7, 2017

    • Return: evening on Friday, June 9, 2017

    • Cost: $709

    • Additional expenses: lunch on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday; dinner on Friday; $10 gratuity; money for souvenirs

    • Transportation: Bus

    • Accommodation: Hotel outside of NYC

    • Tour Operator: Jumpstreet Educational Tours

    I worked with multiple tour companies in order to offer our students an outstanding experience that connects with the HMS curriculum in multiple disciplines.  I am disappointed to not provide this trip at my stated goal of under $700, however the flexibility, customer service, and background checks of each company convinced me that going slightly over this figure was better than sacrificing quality.  I firmly believe that Jumpstreet Educational Tours will offer us a superior educational and social experience.  
    Next Wednesday, November 9, I will send a listserve message to you with our draft itinerary that includes details on creating an online account where you will register your child and send payments.  For your planning purposes, there are four payment due dates:
    • December 1, 2016: $100/student

    • February 3, 2017: $200/student

    • March 3, 2017: $200/student

    • April 7, 2017: $209/student

    We are excited to undertake this trip and hope that you and your child feel the same.  I have greatly appreciated your feedback, patience and understanding as we made this shift.

    Dear Parents,

     

    We hope that you are enjoying the long weekend with your family as much as we were able to enjoy the first two days of the 2016-2017 School year.  As an educator, I always enjoy starting before Labor Day as I feel as though it allows us to handle a lot of logistical items with students -- lockers, school, homeroom and classroom procedures -- before we dig into the work of the year when we return from the long weekend.

     

    We had a great two days together.  During our welcome assembly with grade 6 students, Mrs. Grady, Mrs. Benbenek and I were pleased to hear from students as to how much they enjoyed their first day and half together.  Leading the way among HMS compliments were the number of clubs offered and the food in the cafeteria.  We’re striving to also impress students with our curriculum and instruction, but expect that will take some time.

     

    During the Grade 6 Welcome Assembly, we shared this presentation.  Next week, we will also meet with our grades 7 and 8 teams, and while we typically cover less detail since the majority of grades 7 and 8 students were with us last year, much of the content is similar.

     

    Important Forms to be Returned to HMS

    Finally, in addition to the forms that were sent home last week, we have several more items that require your attention. Handbook Acknowledgement Forms  and the 1:1 Manual must be returned to your child’s homeroom teacher on or before Friday, September 9.

    Please ensure that you and your child read through the Hopkinton Middle School Student and Parent Handbook as it outlines the expectations we have of one another and serves as a guide to a successful year together.

    Finally, we ask that you and your child please review the Hopkinton Middle School 1:1 Digital Learning Student and Parent Manual.  Parents and students are required to read the manual and to digitally sign the “Acknowledgement of Receipt and Understanding” found at the end of the manual.

    Throughout the year, we publish photographs of staff and students.   The Photo Restriction Form is only to be returned if you do NOT want us to publish a photograph of your child.  Please return this to your child’s homeroom teacher on or before September 9.

     

    Back to School Nights

    For grade 6 parents, we look forward to seeing you on Wednesday night, September 7 at 6:30 p.m. for our Grade 6 Back to School Night.  Your child will bring home a schedule for you to follow that evening.

    Restorative Culture Presentation

    Finally, please mark your calendars for a very special parent presentation on the evening of October 24 at 6:30 p.m. at the HMS Auditorium.  Through the generosity of the HopkintonEducation Foundation, we are pleased to present Katy Hutchinson, a caring parent and restorative justice advocate.  Ms. Hutchinson will be speaking to our staff and students at HMS and HHS on the power of creating a culture that supports the health and growth of all students.

    Dear Middle School Parents,


    I would like to make you aware of proposed changes to our grades 7 and 8 math programs for the upcoming school year.  As you may know, we offer varying levels of math classes beginning in grade 7.  In the current year (2015-2016), these levels are:

    When we established the current Honors Math model, it enabled us to accommodate a greater number of “above grade level” math students and override requests from parents.  However, in doing so we are not adequately meeting the needs of either group of students (those that do well on grade level math, and those that perform well above-grade level math).

    Trends in Substance Use Among Teens Parent Guidance Presentation

    A presentation designed for parents of 4th-9th graders, this talk will provide basic information about the trends of substance use and abuse among teens, and will focus on what parents can do to keep their children from using. Involved parents are the first line of defense against substance use, yet many parents struggle with how to address these issues with their children. Through this presentation, parents will be given strategies on how to talk to their kids about alcohol and illicit substances, and how to handle potential use.

    Dangers of a Popular Social Media App: Yik Yak

    In an effort to keep teens safe, we wanted to make you aware of a recent trend in social media. Yik Yak is a social bulletin board displaying messages from people in a user’s area that can be voted “up” or “down” on the page.

    The anonymous social wall has been popular in Hopkinton Middle and High School. This app is free and easy to download. The app is location based and allows you to post whatever you want about whomever you want anonymously.  Its radius is limited to a 1.5 mile area, so it’s really a conversation by Hopkinton teens about Hopkinton teens. As the School Resource Officer, I have monitored this site and found some positive but mostly negative chats that are derogatory or may even be considered bullying.

    There are an infinite number of applications, so we can never eliminate or block all of them. Please talk with your children about what apps they use and educate them about the dangers of social media. If you have questions, please contact:

    Dear Parent/Guardian:

    Welcome to Hopkinton Middle School.   We are excited to greet you and your child and look forward to this year. 

    On Thursday, September 4, all 8th graders should report to the Auditorium; all 7th graders should report to the Brown Gym; and all sixth graders will meet in the Doyle Gym.  At that time, their homeroom teachers will call out their names and/or homeroom designations, and students will proceed to their homerooms, where they will receive their locker assignments. 

    Each homeroom teacher will carefully review schedules with their students. Each student will receive a printed schedule on the first day of school.  With the exception of music and physical education classes, all related arts courses are offered on a trimester basis.  Subsequently, students will be issued a new schedule each trimester. The schedule that students receive on the first day of school is for trimester one. 

    Due to traffic congestion and dangerous pedestrian situations, drivers who are dropping off students in the morning and/or picking up students after school must follow the blue traffic flow lines.   Do not drive between rows of parked cars. 

    All students MUST be dropped off at the water tower/Brown Gym parking lot in the mornings.  Officer Phil Powers will be present to assist with traffic flow.  Please note:  If you are dropping off your student, please do not drop off your student BEFORE 7:00 a.m. The building is open to students at 7:00 a.m. 

    Please do not drop your student off in front of the Middle School building at the front entrance.  Dropping off at the front entrance near the Main Office is ONLY for late drop offs AFTER 7:30 a.m., when the building is locked.  For the safety of our students and staff, there should be no traffic in front of the Middle School building BEFORE 7:30 a.m.  

    Additionally, if you must come into the Middle School to conduct business, please do not park outside the entrance to the Middle School.  Visitor parking spaces are provided for you in the parking lot.
