2016-2017 Math Update

April 12, 2016

Dear Middle School Parents,

I would like to make you aware of proposed changes to our grades 7 and 8 math programs for the upcoming school year.  As you may know, we offer varying levels of math classes beginning in grade 7.  In the current year (2015-2016), these levels are:

2015-2016 Grades 7 and 8 Math

Grade 7

Grade 8

Co-Taught Math 7

Co-Taught Math 8

Math 7

Math 8

Honors Math 7

Honors Math 8

When we established the current Honors Math model, it enabled us to accommodate a greater number of “above grade level” math students and override requests from parents.  However, in doing so we are not adequately meeting the needs of either group of students (those that do well on grade level math, and those that perform well above-grade level math).

Therefore, in the 2016-2017 school year, we are preparing to shift to a model that will offer Grade 7 Pre-Algebra and Grade 8 Algebra 1 for students whose math skills and knowledge are well-above grade level:

Proposed 2016-2017 Grades 7 and 8 Math

Grade 7

Grade 8

Math 7

Math 8

Honors Math 7

Honors Math 8

Grade 7 Pre-Algebra

Grade 8 Algebra 1

Criteria used for determining student’s placement into Grade 7 Pre-Algebra or Grade 8 Algebra:

Criteria for entering Grade 7 Pre-Algebra

Criteria for entering Grade 8 Algebra 1

Fluency Assessment (April 2016)

Currently enrolled in Honors Math 7 (or recommendation from Math 7 teacher)

MCAS (May 2015)

MCAS (May 2015)

Iowa Algebra Aptitude Test (April 2016)

Iowa Algebra Aptitude Test (April 2016)

Year-to-date assessment grade (May 2015)

Year-to-date grade (May 2015)

Teacher Rubric

We will be discussing this shift, in addition to its alignment with High School pathways at our upcoming Grades 6-12 Science, Technology, Engineering and Math evening (7:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 14 in the HMS Library).

Thank you,

Alan M. Keller

HMS Principal
